Bitburger

This was something I found in the Click Catalog, and remember it from my beer drinking infancy. Pale golden color. On the nose, medium intensity, skunky water, hay, grain, no fruit, classic lager. On the palate, light body, medium alcohol, medium intensity, a good easy drinking beer that isn’t as flavorless as some of the North American counterparts. I got this because I wanted something different, and it delivered.

Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse Dunkel

This is a great German bier beloved by our friend Doctor John who spent many years in Germany. Not a favorite style of mine, but still highly enjoyable. Nice beige head, amber/brown body and slightly hazy. Dry and malty with hints of banana and clove. Slight citrus on the finish. Light mouth feel with decent carbonation. Don’t go into this beer expecting a standard cloudy, bread like American hefeweissen! You will be disappointed. This is exactly why I like this beer.

Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Marzen

I’ve always liked rauchbiers. Most people don’t. It’s the scotch of the beer world. They are extremely smokey due to the barley being dried in the old style; over a fire instead of in the sun/indoors. This used to be done in northern Europe due to the lack of sun and these guys carry on that tradition. Many people say that they smell/taste bacon in this beer but It’s more straight forward smoke and leather. Granted this one was enjoyed around a campfire so smoke was already present but I’ve had it enough to know whats in there. It’s a very light mouth feel and lower ABV making it even more unique. I’d expect this smokiness and flavor in a big stout or porter; something that you can chew on! If you want to have fun, get one of these, a Hair of The Dog Adam, and an Alaskan Smoked Porter and pour them side by side. Prost!
